And now I blog

I’ve been running a software company for over 22 years now, and always managed to go without a personal blog. We’ve had company blogs on and off over the years, where I wrote a thing or two, but they all faced challenges. Too little time, too many distractions, too much perfectionism, shifting priorities. So what changed?

Well, for one, we’ve been starting to run internal blogs a while ago. I’ll hopefully share more detail later on, but essentially, we killed all meetings and re-directed that time to written communication. And so, I’ve written tens of thousands of words about technical insights, challenges, and considerations. For example, I’m currently diving deep into Swift structured concurrency, TextKit 2 and SwiftUI, mixing them up and testing the limits. What I learn, I share with the team. I spend hours writing that up, for myself to reflect and five others to read. That’s kind of a waste. If I only could easily share those text online…

The other thing that recently happened is Cursor and Claude. I’m an adaptor and using it daily for work. Since the stuff I write internally for the team is usually sloppy and in German, publishing without modification is off the table. I hope that with a little translation and language help, turning internal posts into publishable ones becomes much more straightforward. Before you ask: I take full ownership of everything I write, be it code or words. But if tools make that easier, I will use them.

Finally, I’m doing this for a long time now. So maybe it’s because I’m about to turn 40 next year. I’ve seen some, experienced some, and think I know a few things that others may find interesting. Since I’m reading a lot, I might as well try to write a bit, too.

And so, let’s hope this is not the only post ever on this blog. Read you soon!
